INSPIRE US 2016: Opportunity of a lifetime for sixth-form students!

The Transformation Trust is delighted to be offering a truly once-in-a-lifetime work experience opportunity for sixth-form students.

Inspire US 2016 will see 20 sixth-formers from five different schools travel to the US to be campaign interns for the final two weeks of the US elections. Working in the swing state of Florida, the students will work alongside seasoned political campaigners from both national parties.

The trip is a repeat of the highly successful 2012 trip run by the Transformation Trust.

Day to day, students will get involved in canvassing voters, attending rallies, and getting the vote out on the all-important election day on Tuesday 8 November, 2016. Before travelling home, the students will stop off at Washington DC, to take in some of the main political landmarks, including the White House and Capitol Hill.

The trip is fully funded, with all travel and accommodation covered.

Schools wishing to be considered for places should complete the application form. We are looking for four outstanding students, plus a teacher from each school. The students will either already be studying politics or a related subject (for example, economics or international relations), or be keen to read politics or similar at university.

The application window is open until Thursday 24 March. Shortlisted schools will then be invited to interview in the Summer Term, with the final schools selected before the summer holidays

This year, The Gateway Academy was our winning school for the highly competitive Big Energy Project Challenge 2014. True to its values of ‘encouraging lifelong learning and an interest in the world around them’, these select students presented an exceptional project which eventually won them a trip to London where they were treated to two days of further learning, science based fun activities and even a night out in the West End!

On the first day, our winning team left bright and early on a train to London headed to their first stop – Kings College, London where they participated in a practical and investigative Science workshop exploring ‘dye-sensitised solar cells’ and ‘Hydrogen Fuel Cells’. The students thoroughly enjoyed the hands-on fun of creating their own alternative power supply to fuel objects and measure energy output. Having spent an afternoon in lab coats, the students were then taken on a bird’s eye tour of London in the much famed London Eye where they enjoyed spectacular wintery views.

The next day saw the team visiting EDF’s headquarters where they met with EDF Energy and the Transformation Trust representatives to present their campaign and learn a little more about the work surrounding EDF Energy. A trip to the Science Museum with a tour and talk on electricity hosted by a costumed Michael Faraday followed, including a visit to the exhibition on Energy: Fuelling the Future, in particular was greatly enjoyed by all. The team hit London’s West End to watch Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. After two days of discovery and well deserved fun, it was time for the team to leave the bright lights of London and head home where we hope they will continue to excel in their fields of work.
